Good morning.
BIG NEWS! From Monday, I’ll be writing a version of this newsletter for Channels Television. It’s an expanded version, of course, with stories from Africa and across the world. A tall order but hoping I can pull it off with the help of my amazing colleagues. Please subscribe here:
Meanwhile, to today’s news:
Fate of PDP Convention to be decided today
The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt will today decide whether the Peoples Democratic Party will hold its convention this weekend.
Like the APC, the PDP has been ravaged by internal squabbles, leading to the ouster of erstwhile party chairman, Uche Secondus.
However, Secondus isn’t giving up without a fight, dragging the party to the Appeal Court to stop the convention from holding before his suspension is lifted.
It’s the perfect legal climax. If the court rules in favour of Secondus today, then he still has a chance of retaining his seat as Chairman; but if the convention is allowed to go ahead, then all hope can as well be lost.
Dino Melaye: The controversial senator, a PDP member, said he was certain that the court will rule in favour of the PDP.
Olusgeun Mimiko: Four PDP Governors visited the former Ondo State Governor on Thursday urging him to join the PDP. Mimiko seems pleased with the idea, but he has asked for more time to consult his base.
What else is happening?
Wole Soyinka: The Nobel laureate, at a press conference in Lagos, complained bitterly about the special requirements for Nigerians travelling into the country from Paris. “Nobody is saying we shouldn’t take the necessary precautions,” he said. “Other nations do it, but I don’t believe that other nationals are obstructed the way we are. It is not a pleasant sight to see your fellow Nigerians lying on couches – they can’t go in, they can’t go out; they are trapped in limbo.”
Borno: Suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a surprise attack on Damboa on Thursday evening, causing residents to flee and take shelter indoors. Damboa is about 80km southwest of Maiduguri. One report said the insurgents rolled into town with about 15 insurgents but were already being engaged by the military, as of yesterday evening.
Presidential clinic: The Permanent Secretary of the State House, Mr Umar Tijanni, said on Thursday that President Buhari had approved the construction and equipping of the 14-bed clinic at a cost of N21 billion.
Lekki Deep Sea Port: Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, believes the port would become operational in the third quarter of 2023.
NSCDC: The paramilitary force has deployed 20,000 of its officers to Anambra for the imminent governorship election, which is scheduled to hold on November 6.
Abba Kyari: The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, said the police is yet to receive a formal extradition request for the suspended deputy commissioner of police after his indictment by a US court for fraud.
And that’s it for today. See you on the other side.
